  • Need qualified mechanic that can work on an 88 turbo

Hello, I am in Myrtle Beach SC and I have a 1988 300zx Turbo. It has had a complete tune up as well as a new fuel pump. I have owned several of these cars over the years, and I know they are not extremely fast, but this one feels SLOW!! I do know that this Shiro model is capable of 150mph but I have stretched this one out and I can't seem to get it to go over about 125 or so. Even the 0-60 feels way off. I know something is not right and there are no mechanics in my area that are familiar with these cars. I need someone that can dial it in, or figure out what is going on. Any ideas on really good shops fairly close to me? I am not looking for a mechanic that wants to guess and just replace parts, I need a place that knows these cars and can get it running like it should. Thanks in advance, Bill

My previous Shiro was in tip top shape.
However, is was sorta slow on launch.
Turns out the stock T25 wastegate actuator was defective and not hitting full boost.

I have read that the wastegate actuators on the T25 can be known to fail.

      Otherwise, check your basics..
      Timing
      Vacuum/Intake leaks
      Spark Related
      Etc...

Swap T25 to the more capable T3, swap tiny exhaust to full 3". And unlike NA all turbo ECU's are rev limited.

Bill, I'm not sure if you're going to find a tech recommendation here for 2 reasons; you'd have to find another member that posts and lives in your area and most of the regulars here don't want/pay/trust others to work on their Zs. Just the atmosphere here. Most are willing to help, but you will need some mechanical expertise yourself and willingness to do the work.

Additional forums you might have some luck finding a local Nissan specialist are NICO club and HybridZ. NICO seems like a large forum so thats where I would probably start searching first.

Good luck and welcome to Z31P!

I assume you meant speed limited? In which case the shiro model is the only exception to that far as turbos go.

Yep...speed limited. I remember putting my 86T up on stands and hitting the limiter at around a buck twenty five. The 87 Na2T running 460cc injectors/Nistune, 3" exhaust etc. is a another story.

No its not, the Shiro isn't any different than any other 88 turbo when it comes to the engine, transmission, and electronics. They are all speed limited from the factory.
