  • IC Coupler/Clamp Inquiry

    Hay guys...

I think I found a boost leak in my IC setup. A little backgorund, I got the hks fmic setup. When the car is cold, it holds boost fine. Once warm, the car still boosts, but not as much & the turbo spool sounds strange. A "hissing" noise, so Im thinking I got a boost leak on my hands.

Im gonna investigate other things & re-tighten clamps but while I have it off, might as well get some clamps more conducive to higher boost levels. Since Im assuming the HKS was designed for stock use.

Theres two points where I think it is failing. Right when it exits the turbo, the turbo has a big "lip" on it. I have the clamp tight on the "lip" but I swear when it gets warm, it leaks. Plus that lip causes the IC coupler to line up funny (cuz I think the thinckness of the lip causes it to be bigger than 2").

Also under the car, at the point where my IC pipe curves into the actual tank itself, its misaligned (due to non-stock fitment), so that piece is suspect too.

Everywhere else on the car, the pipes are aligned and fit nicely. Theres guys running 20+psi through this same hks setup, so the pipes can flow it (dont know bout stock turbo tho). Those two areas either need better couplers and/or stronger "boost-proof" clamps (right now im using standard clamps). What do ya'll use/recommend???

    Turbo lip looks like this:

I use high quality T-bolt clamps, the leaks should be very easy to find if it's that bad...

yeah, I think I isolated where its leaking. Its hard with car just sitting there to be sure, might try to pressure test it (if I can find someone with one ghetto-rigged up already)

T-clamps sound good. The pipes are bead-rolled, so I think normal clamps are fine for inter-pipe connections. But will get t-clamps for both IC tanks connections, the throttle body connections, and that turbo lip connection. Maybe some silicone couplers too.

Know any good websites with good prices? or is eBay any good for these?

Ebay is good however, if you are gonna do T-bolts then dont cheap out. Find out all the sizes you need and tbolt the whole thing. Lots of sites on ebay will allow you to mix and match sizes. Just do some searching.

You pay for what you get... Whats worse, paying a few extra dollars for some good high quality clamps or having a pipe blow off doing 100mph at 12psi+? :P

Yeah but a T-bolt clamp is a little different then say I dunno, A TURBO. T-bolt clamps are cheap to produce and should NOT cost 10 bucks a clamp. which I have also seen. That is just rediculous. I would say 2.50 a clamp is a fair deal.

Well....maybe in the US but not around here!!!!

Princess Auto 5-10 per clamp...cheapest around here...till I found the same stainless T-bolt clamps at Windsor Factory Supply for 2-4 a peice.
and yes they do sell them in stores...you just have to know what stores to look in around here...

If you find a Dodge cummins diesal(or maybe other turbo diesal trucks) at a junk yard, nab there clamps.

Terrible idea putting those wheels on...
