How do I tell if I have a W series block?

The easiest way I find is to inspect the thermostat housing. The one with a lip on the lower portion is a w-series style unit made for RTV. The non-w uses a gasket and looks a little different.

This is by no means a 100% accurate means, but 99% of engines probably have the factory thermostat housing on them.

Look at the pulley assembly on the crank.
If the front pulley is bolted on, it's a Non W-series.
        If it's a solid unit, it's a W-series.

That certianly isn't the easiest way. It may be the only 100% accurate w/o disassembly. A W block could have all non-W parts in it and you can't visually tell from that I'm aware of. (externally that is)

There are many ways to tell depending on what parts are there and available for visual inspection.

behind the passenger side head there is a code pressed into the remaining deck, it will always end in vg30. A w-series should start with a capital W.
