  • Rearend tranny swap for serious dragracing

Looks like I'm up for lots of dragracing this summer. I'm going for mid 10s runs, and I'll probably want more when I get there...
My Rearend was almost falling apart last summer, So I'm getting rid of it. question is, what should I put there instead?

I'm currently thinking about ford 9" or chevy 8 3/4" axle and 4-link, Have You heard of somebody who've done this? good/bad idea? alternatives? Transmission(Manual) to go with that?

And, yes, I know that a rear end swap not gonna be a bolt on mod

well, I think you have the right idea. However if you are planning to go with a 9" and a four link setup with a new tranny, I would hope you would be aiming a lot lower than low 10's

TH-400 for the tranny. Oh wait, you wanted a manual tranny. Well then how bout a viper spec T-56! Or you could just stick with the R30A nissan tranny that will hold low 10's no problem.

If you want an alternative that involves much LESS work. Give modern motorsports a call and get the axle stubs and companion flanges they sell. Whole kit is like14-1500 with bearings. Good for 9's Then you may have to weld you diff, maybe not who can tell but it would be a good Idea for drag racing.

A ford 9" with 35 spline axles and a spool will do wonders. Weld up the axle tubes. Yeah baby. Link it up to the T56 viper spec like SATAN recommended and you'll be set. Custom driveshaft needed of course.

A 9" ford is a a heavy unit and you don't need that much bulk for those times. I'd say go with a nissan h233b or toyota axle. They are both larger ring gears than the Ford, lighter, and cheaper. Plus they demand a much lower pricetag.

It sounds like he is leaving room for future upgrades to though. Can those axle's be upgraded? Ok, well can you find off the shelf upgrade parts for those axles is the better question.

Modern Motorsport stubs and flanges, Cusco clutch LSD

that way you can keep the IRS, unless all you care about is straight line driving.

Holy crap thats sweet!!! And he is doing the actual 4 link not just throwing a live axle in and calling it a day!!!

For those that dont know, A four link rear end allows you to adjust your center of gravity for when you launch your car. You dont want to pop too big of a wheelie because that is energy and traction wasted and a four link help to adjust that.

yup 4 link FTW if I had the time and money I would be all about it for my car

9" Is great but like it was said above they are heavy and expensive. I do have one laying around that I might sell. I dont know about shipping it to Sweden though :?

Modern Motorsport stubs and flanges and the R30A tranny are really the way to go if your looking for 10s

Mid 10's is what I want to run this summer, But I really wouldn't do a 9" swap if I was only looking for 10s runs would I
I'll probably go for that 9", that's an easy find in the junkyards over here.
I do want a 30A tranny, Since I don't think I can afford a T-56 or similar now. But the 30A is so #%& hard to find in this part of the world (read: Sweden, Scandinavia, Europe)

Is it possible to take the 30A tranny out of the 4WD V6 Nissan trucks and unmount the transfer case?

It is POSSIBLE, but you still need parts from a donor tranny like the tailhousing and speed sensor. If you can find a 2wd Pathfinder or a VG equiped Hardbody, they have the 30A.

As for the axle, if you aren't going to convert the back half, you're better off waiting till you can. And the nissan and toyota axles are upgradeable. Ring gears are not as cheap as a ford, but the rest are about the same. Find a beat up Pathfinder and buy the whole thing. Then you have everything to go with the parts you need. Plus the Pathfinder variant is already setup for a 4 link with panhard bar.

Ford 8.8' with Nissan 30A trans has my vote.

3.7 is an option to keep stock gearing. Cheap, easily available all over the place from mustangs, proven strong, same wheel bolt pattern, 180 LSD options to pick from, disc brake options available, etc etc.

People run 9's and 1.4 60' on the 8.8's without issue, and being way cheaper than the 9'... it's what I would do if I were building a drag car.
