It is likely in bad shape, and the cheapest way to repair it will be to find a good used auto (good luck) or convert to a 5sp.

If you do go back with an auto, be sure to add a tranny cooler.Chuck Stong

I'm guessing this isn't what you want to hear, but 5sp swaps aren't too hard
On the other hand I have an 87 NA auto i'll sell you for almost nothing. It has 155,xxx miles on it and had lockup troubles when removed so it's not your best investment unless you are looking for a good core to rebuild or beef up. Been stored inside; only out of the car for about 2 months now.My beloved Z:1987 2+2 NA2T w/30a swap.
My black sheep: 88ss parts car (pretty much stripped and gone)
207k miles and counting. Turbo'd since 155k.

13psi on an original factory automatic? No wonder! To be honest you're lucky it even lasted this long. As others have said your cheapest option is going to be a manual conversion, the only other smart thing to do would be to rebuild it entirely which will cost close to 2 grand.

I don't think there's any way for us to diagnose your problem from here. Although I'm dying to know what the problem is and how you could fix it. I too have an auto and want to keep it that way. That's why I plan to get a TC and 30k tranny cooler. I'm willing to bet that heat was your problem, as it is commonly. If you plan to get another auto, invest in a cooler.
There's places that won't charge you much, if anything at all, to open it up and diagnose the problem. I'm hoping you'll do that since a lot of us here would probably like to know.1987 300ZX Turbo - http://www.z31performance.com/forum/vie ... php?t=3114

Bernardd is also running a modified 3N71B at probably over 400whp, I think all he did was an old B&M shift kit and tractor hydraulic oil? There's info in the automatic buildup thread.

If you got a big enough tranny cooler w/fan and temp gauge, and watched the temps, then you'll never have a problem with any kind of fluid you put in it. Flex-a-lite's fan kicks on when the temps go above a preset. Set it to around 180.
This one is a monster and should be more than enough for racing:
