Here is the page from the 1990 WD21/D21 FSM. As I understand it, all V6 trucks (including pathfinder) from 1990-95 should have the 30A with these ratios. 4cyl was only in the trucks in US and had a 71C behind them.

Also note, trucks have anywhere from a 3.54 (4 cyl 2wd truck) to a 4.62 (4wd Pathfinder Auto).

look at the oil capacity !

for 4wd they add a ton of extra fluid.... they must have seen early failures without it

it's a safe assumption that using the 4wd capacity is fine for 2wd too, and at least splitting the difference makes sense

Remember that there is a transfer case on the back half of the 4wd
        tranny.

hmm, I thought the transfer case was seperate, but I suppose they share fluid on way or another

I forget if it's auto or manual that shares the fluid with transfer case. But I know for sure that one does NOT share it. There is a different adapter plate between the tranny and tsfr case between the two types.

transfer cases do not share fluid with the tranny.

there is an output on the tranny that mates to the case. there are seals inbetween the two. no sharing of fluids.

Alas you appear to be right. I could have sworn one or the other shared fluid.
                Oh well....proof below.

i've been into 4 wheeling for a long time. i have a lot of drive train knowledge. the transmission, transfer case and axles are the most important items in a 4x4.

Oh believe me I know. So far (crosses his fingers) I have had no need to pull the tranny/tsfr case on the pathy. And I'm kinda hoping not too. Hard wheeling kills auto trannies, but the tx10 seems to be quite strong. The crawler gears available for it are nice but BIG $$$$$$$.

The 4X2 VG powered pathfinder/frontier trucks use the same 30A as the 87-89T Z31. Based on visual inspection, I am almost certain you should be able to interchange them without issue:

when i'm finished with school i'm picking up a Xterra for wheeling. i'm going to cut off the front suspension and add a straight axle. probably dana 44. i like running trails. 33" tires are usually perfect for what i like to do. those X's are sweet vehicles. only 2 more years baby!!!

i use a manual tranny when i wheel. i like to be able to control my ability to roll my vehicle. if you feel it going over stomp on the clutch and you'll stop the roll.

Do you remember Al Dunbar, Jason? His car had a 30A from a 90 2wd pathfinder in it. I think Wes87T bought that car a year or so ago from him. But I don't think Wes knows a whole lot of the cars history.

FYI... the reason Nissan upped the fluid capacity on the 4x4 is to correct the tendancy of oil starvation to the front mainshaft bearings when driving up an incline. However, they didn't FIX the problem. As a 2nd FYI... if you ever get one of these transmissions, you cannot overfill it... pull off the shifter cover from the top of the trans... and dump in an extra qt. of fluid whenever servicing the trans... or use a jack to lift the vehicle from the side severl feet... pour fluid in diagonally sideways through the normal fill-hole to accomplish the same thing. This is something us 4x4 Nissan owners have done for ages.

and that goes along nicely with the idea that we as flat sports cars could at least use the 4wd fluid level safely, perhaps more safely than the recommended level
