It depends on so many things, just starting with the plugs and ignition system being used. The simple answer is to run as small of a gap as you need to stop it from breaking up at high boost. I always ran stock gap before I upgraded the turbo/fuel.

Well I use 95 octane daily, 98 when I have extra coin to burn.

What's the stock gap in inches, is it infact .040? I was just making a guess there...

            you be upside down tho

up in the north we use aki which is rated lower than your RON.... so your 96RON would be like 89 octane here

              ( RON Octane Rating x 0.95 = AKI Octane Rating )
              98 RON Octane x 0.95 = 93.1 AKI Octane (US measure)
              100 RON Octane x 0.95 = 95 AKI Octane (US measure)

Seems as if you're right, I use 105 octane when I can but god that stuff is expensive....

Anyway, stock plug gap in inches, anyone?

actually it's more complicated than that, each fuel "tests" differently, so while two fuels may both be 98ron, one might be 2-3 MON points lower than the other

but as a guide I think you're right

                  You don't have a FSM?

                  I believe it's .044"

I couldnt find it in the Haynes manual which is all I have, I have the details for metric which is 1.1mm and 0.44 is very close to that so it sounds about right. Just wanted to make sure so I can actually use the information in this thread about plug gaps lol

They're pumping out the higher octane fuels here like there's no 2mora, cleaner burning they try to say but I know better as the shit costs 2x as much as regular lol My 86T does love 98 octane though, noticebly runs better using 98 than anything lower.

I run a .32 gap with stock boost (7 psi). This was to compensate for the POS junkyard electronics from the 1981.

Would I see an increase in performance if I went up to .43? I generally don't wind out the motor too much because the rubber in the harmonic damper looks iffy.

I doubt you would see any better performance, the only thing that might improve is the idle. They told us at school it is harder to ignite the mixture at idle with a short gap, that is why most stockuse the biggest gap they can run without blowing out at high RPM.

BTW, for everyone else, stock gap is supposed to be .043" by the manual
