  • MSD Knock Alert

    http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... toview=sku

Has anyone tried one of these systems and has an opinion on it? I figure with the way I drive, I'm going to need some sort of safety precaution on my new engine... heh.

The turboxs knocklite seems to be about the same thing except calibrated a little differently to turn on a light instead of a series of them.

    I am seriously considering one

Wow, thanks for showing me this. I'd prefer this over the msd box. I even considered making one, but my knowledge of electronics is too poor (even with the write-up I found!)

Now only how to keep people like my dad from thinking it's a shift light... =)

That MSD kit appears to come with it's own Knock Sensor instead of using the stock sensor...also it's about $60 more...oh and btw the TurboXS unit is calibratable as a dual function light and can be used as a shift light as well.

I have read they are really good! They listen for a certain frequency of sound to detect detonation. BUT one bad part is that the valve hitting the seat can imitate this sound at some rpms and give you a false alert. I also read about a new system that reads cyl pressure spikes to determine whether you are detonating or not. But i have nver seen this product on the market.

not that I know anything about detonation sensors, but turboxs seems to recommend using a bosch broadband sensor? Is our 20 year old device good enough?

Most likely, unless it has been smacked or dropped in its lifetime.

Edit: I've heard most crystal det sensors are trimmed to put out voltage when getting spikes in the 6-8kHz range which the ECU (or here the knocklite) then interprets. Not only do they not resonate at the correct frequency when damaged, but other engine components can also put off frequencies in that range meaning false readings. I guess in the end it all boils down to how the unit reads the signal it gets from the sensor.

What kind of work car needs if i get this?

I was offered MSD box but hence it comes with own knock sensor i have no idea how to make it work. Does it have plug that i can connect org. knock sensor plug or do i need it anymore? (org. signal goes to ECU?)

standard knock sensors are piezo, I would imagine from an interpretive standpoint that the easiest way to deal with the signal is to time lapse it, the vibrations in an engine should be pretty consistent across time keeping in mind that rpm changes relatively slowly compared to the piezo element

basically you just need to notice irregularities, so if you have circuitry that can counteract new spikes based on old spikes and then further oversample the output, you can filter the engine to silence and just detect knock

of course I'm no board level electrician so I can only guess how you'd make one
