  • Need bearings from Nissan

A friend of mine works at a Nissan parts store, and he's having trouble finding bearings for "older Z's". The part #'s don't say what size the bearings are.
I'm gonna shave the crank, so i'll need 25 over bearings all around. Does anyone know the actual part numbers for them all?

No cupholders? Where am I gonna put my beer????

You'd be better off with another crank.

I know it lists the sizes and grades in there.

But I'm with Crazed, get another crank and use the appropriate std bearings. You are better off going that route.

Where exactly am I gonna get another crank that is gauranteed not to need grinding? If I found one, it wouldn't be cheap. There's nothing wrong with going with oversize bearings. People do it everyday in performance engines.

Unless I'm not understanding the numbers, the fiche doesn't say what the oversize bearings are. http://z31.com/fiche/2/d02.gif

I did find this page, which gives "grades 0,1,2" with tolerances and clearances. http://z31.com/repairs/data.txt

You have to look at the listing pages. Not just the illustrations. In the description column they tell you .25mm, .50mm or something similar.

Why do you think you need to machine your crank anyway? I have never turned a VG30 crank and only replaced one due to an enlarged keyway slot in the snout. If you turn them, you remove the part that has been nitrided and you loose a good deal of strength. I don't fully understand the nitride process, but I know it is only the surface that is hardened.

The crank has 180,000 miles on it and my machinist did the measurments. He said it was on the low side of std. I could have put std bearings on it, but then I would run the chance of having low oil pressure with the gap.

k, nevermind then. All the Nissan dealers are telling me that they don't sell oversize bearings. Only stock std.
              Guess I'll find some Clevites.

Go to the fiche, get the numbers for the bearings you want and then go to nissanparts.cc. They will sell you the parts for a good price and won't second guess your intentions.

As for the crank, did they give you an actual set of measurements? If memory serves, there is a std oversize that is some minute amount larger which you use instead of machining and using regular oversize bearings.

Don't make me go to the fiche and show you!

*edit* Also look at EM42-EM44 in the FSM (ref. 1987 FSM)

My bad, I forgot to fill out my profile.

I already have the motor at the machine shop. They're pretty experienced and I've done a walk through of their shop to check out the machines. Pretty expensive stuff.
Anyways, he's recommended to grind the crank, and he has Clevites available for $40, so I told him to go ahead with it.

That goes against my beliefs, but it is what gets him paid.
