  • Piston pin bushings

I'm rolling over FSM stuff trying to figure this one out.

Most of us know that the Z32 pistons used a slightly bigger piston pin.. the 'common' fix to this is to use z32 rods.

My vg33, as per the FSM, has the same size bushing/pin as the 88t w-series.

New pin bushings for the rods are ~6$ each via nissanparts.cc , a little machine-shop work, and voila, my rods will now work with forged pistons made for a z32.

The downside. The FSM's only list the inner diameters of these parts. I cannot find the sizes of the holes without the bushings installed.. which is what will tell me if this will work or not.

Anybody have a set of both and willing to look/measure if the outer diameter of the pin bushings are the same?

I may have to buy one of each from the dealership and mic it out.
vg33et -blew some chunks outta it, then gave it all away.

Not what you are asking for, but I have a set of z32 rods with pistons
I will part with for a reasonable offer.

Have you found some z32 pistons that are 91.5mm?
    Mind passing on the info?

nope, They'll be forged and probably from brc.. and 91.5mm is a little small for my tastes

I'll keep that in mind if I can't rebush my rods, and nobodies willing to give me a pin that's the right size.

mind knocking a piston off one and measuring the bushing outer diameter?

mind sharing what you've done with your 33?

Ahhh, so your just after the larger pin dia.
Thought about cryo treating the ones you've got?

I'll see what I can do. I don't have a dial calliper, but I have freinds that do.

not specifically after the larger pin diameter. Just looking down my road at the possible complications (if they just want to cut me a larger z32 piston) and solutions.

I'm not concerned about the rods. I'll toss some ARP hardware on them and call them good. I've never seen anybody toss a stock rod from anything other than bearing failures.

If you are getting custom pistons made then they should come with the correct pins. You should call Atomic Speedware and talk to nick. He will give you the same 2618 aluminum that BRC uses for cheaper. Also they come with Total Seal rings, pins, and spiral lock rings.

I have some TT pistons and some pistons out of a Maxima with a VG30E. The pins look quite similar but I can measure them, if that'll work for you.

Here's a bunch of pictures of the pistons/rods that I posted on a Maxima site.

                Left to right: 84-86 VG30ET, 89-94 Maxima VG30E, 90-96 300ZX VG30DETT

                Left: 84-86 300ZX VG30ET
                Right: 89-94 Maxima VG30E

                Left: 89-94 Maxima VG30E
                Right: 90-96 300ZX VG30DETT

In these pictures the angles screw up the way the rods look. The Maxima rod looks the thinnest of all of them however it is the same thickness as the VG30ET rod (left).

                Right: 89-94 Maxima VG30E

                Left: 89-94 Maxima VG30E
                Right: 90-96 300ZX VG30DETT

Left to right: Z32, Maxima, Z31

(Yes... that piston from the VG30ET is scored all over. There is even a small chunk missing out of the side of it. Whoever messed with that engine before we got the car had no idea what they were doing... that thing was in such bad condition that I'm having to put in a totally different engine. I'm thinking they tried turning up the boost without adding any fuel and/or an aftercoole. There's a manual boost control in the car... yes in the car... without any supporting mods, so I'm guessing they definitely had no idea what they were doing.)

I second that motion. Arias pistons are getting a much bigger following recently. With BRC's failure to even get the correct sized forgings for our bore size or a vg33 (a la Kevin's failed BRC group buy), I'm not sure they would be able to help you out anyway. Who knows, I may have one of the last sets of VG30 pistons BRC made. They should be about the same price either way, so I would go with arias.

hrmm, looks like they added more meat around the big-end after the vg30et.
                    really good info there.
If we can get the outside diameter of the pin bushings... I'll order one from a dett and a 33, to see if I'll have problems with my rods.
I'm going to see what they say about making them to fit my rods already, but I like a little cheap insurance ;D

                    So, BRC's having problems?

Arias then Atomic.. I'll see who wants to actually deal with my little piston project.

                    Thanks!

Atomic pistons are arias pistons. Nick Arias 3 runs atomic and (he is the son.) Also they are about $300 cheaper than ordering directly from arias.
