  • New problem at 5700rpms

Ok I recently installed my 3" cat back from CM. Since then my Z has issues around 5700rpms+. It feels like a clogged fuel filter. Best way I can explain how it feels. Power comes & goes between 5700-6400rpms. Not a miss. I had spark blowout due to a wide gap a while back. Doesn't feel like that. More like sputtering as power comes & goes over 5700rpms. I waited until I removed all the junk "extra" stuff from the plenum & solved my idle issue before looking into this one. Here are some things I already checked.

    no boost leaks
    timing set at 20 degrees
new spark plugs (gapped .27-.28 )
wideband shows good air/fuel at that rpm range (11.8 )
    base fuel pressure is 37lbs

Also, my car's power seems to fall flat over 6100. It used to pull to 6800 when I first got the JWT 450 set up installed. Now it just falls flat over 6100 rpms. It revs past 6100 but power falls off noticebly. Thanks for any & all help!

Does the behavior change or go away at lower boost pressures?

Didn't think of that or try that. Will do that today. Running 18-20lbs of boost right now. I'll try lower boost & see if that changes anything.

This is why I post here. Someone always comes up with things I didn't know or think of. Thanks Jason.

I ran it again at 20 lbs. Same problem.
Ran it at 14 lbs. does the same thing.
Ran it with boost controller off, 9 lbs. does the same thing.

No matter what boost level the car seems to sputter at 5700 rpms & then when I shift to the next gear it sputters for a little bit then clears out. Weird.

            That sounds familiar.
Try bypassing the EBC all together.

Is your A/F ratio changing drastically at that point? What does it look like around say 4500 - 5000rpm?

1987 Nissan 300ZX Turbo (Budget Supercar)
1987 Nissan 200SX SE (Old School FR)
1994 Nissan Sentra SE-R (Balls To The Wall Track Car)
2000 Nissan Maxima SE (Daily Driver)
              2006 Scion tC (Wife Whip)

In an ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand, so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

Nope, my buddy was in the passenger seat adjusting my A/F the other day so we could rule out any fuel related issues. Not to mention I hadn't adjusted the A/F since installing the 3" cat back.

Are you using an Apexi-AVCR? I've heard of this before when using that electronic boost controller...

Does your tach jump or act irregular?

                      Yes I have the AVC-R.

No the tach doesn't do anything. Just revs normally.

I'm trying to think where I saw this now, damnit... I distinctly remember someone using that exact same EBC having the same issues. I bet if you removed it all together the problem would go away. Look in the instruction manual that came with it, might be of some help troubleshooting this.

It's probably me you're thinking of...

                          Read this http://www.redz31.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=681

I actually removed the hoses from the boost control actuator and ran the hose like stock (off the turbo output fitting to the wastegate).
Doing that made the problem disapear. After I reset the AVCR and started from scratch the problem went away. Its been a week and the problem has yet to return. What exactly was wrong is unknown. My best guess is that I didn't set something up correctly or a setting got changed while being bumpped around in my glove box.

Nope it wasn't from here, but that's another one for the books suggesting this problem is more common than I thought with that EBC's configuration.

Well that's something else to try & then rule out. Did yours shudder at high rpms like mine? My car runs great up to 5700rpms. As long as I don't get near those revs my car runs perfectly.
