  • Powdercoating Brake Calipers?

    Good idea or bad idea?

Stinky and I were debating about this at the shop today.

I've got an extra set of twin piston calipers sitting around for my Z's. I'm going to rebuild them, but first, while they are stripped out I was going to add some color to them. If powdercoating holds up to the temperatures, then thats what I will have done to them.

If paint will hold I dont see why powder coat wouldn't.
But, why bother spending that much on my old brakes.
    They will still be ugly.
Put the monies towards some z32 callipers.

any coating will help with surface bonding like sliding pins to caliper, and it will help prevent the flaky rust that happens around the cylinder dust boots

if it's cheap do it, I just painted mine with a brush

I can have mine done for about $10 each caliper, so I think that is cheap.

Not really any downsides I can see from powdercoating calipers. It does insulate the caliper a little, but it's not enough to make any real difference in performance.

That's DAMN cheap. I assume that would be with you doing all of the prep-work?

The main concern that Stinky had was would the powdercoating hold up to the temperatures produced from stopping while daily driving and a little auto-x. I think it would.

Yes, I will do all the prep work, like degreasing, rust removal, and sandblasting, but the powdercoating place will do their own cleaning too, just for quality assurance.

I'm not so sure Z32 calipers will fit under my Conquest TSI wheels without some shaving. Shaving Z32 calipers is counter productive for good looks.

Go for it then, I thought it would have been more pricey than that.
This is with that red stuff yall got?

We could test fit one of your wheels on my car to see if it clears?
