  • electric fan install

I got a couple of e-fans, and they were in the backseat of a pathfinder. I trimmed them to fit in my Z, and they fit quite well now. Each fan has four wires, black and green going to one side of the motor, and blue and yellow going to the other. On my battery charger I hooked up the ground to black, and positive to green. That just makes the motor make a weird noise and nothing happens. Same on the other fan. I switched the positve around to the other colors, but no go. Does more than one lead need power maybe? Can anyone offer any insight?

Is this a 2 speed type fan?

Terrible idea putting those wheels on...

best to look for a PN on the fans and search it up, then source out a wire diagram

A single two speed fan will have 3 wires. What I don't understand is this "Each fan has four wires, black and green going to one side of the motor, and blue and yellow going to the other."
          The other what?

The other side of the motor. Like they are paired off.

And both fan motors are like that. Four wires each. yeah.

I need to figure out in the next couple weeks if these are going to work so I know if I need to exchange these at the junkyard. Thanks for the help people.

the only thing I can get off of it is a sticker that says something like, "Calsonic Japan AK 2K"

Hmmm I dunno about that. Maybe they're wired so that one runs at normal idle and both run when the engine reaches a certain temperature or when the a/c is on. I'd recommend an early to mid 90's Taurus or TBird 3.8 e-fan. They draw a lot of amps on startup but they move hella air from what I hear. I have one but I might wait until the clutch fan croaks before installing it. Mine is from a '92 Taurus. Might be worth checking for one if the j/y will let you exchange the one you have.[url=http://br /a href=]

Stange stuff man. I am sure you have tried a combonation of the wires. But still on movement? Unless it is some special 3 speed fan :? . Ehh, sounds fun

I went to my local Pick and Pull (LKQ in Kalamazoo) and got one of these fans today. Its a pretty nice unit for $20 and should fit nicely on the stock core. I will most likely be installing it this weekend, so i will let you know how it goes.

Yeah I'd be interested in how it works for you. I found a good deal on those bigass relays mentioned in the pirate4x4 writeup. It may be overkill. This company calls it a solenoid but it's the same part.

not much difference between a solenoid and relay if you think about it

however, the colour combo on those e-fans sounds similar to a maxima, but it's possible it's from the pathfinder? check the fsms.... I know the max fans had 2 power and 2 ground on each fan, power one set and it runs low, power both and it goes high

it's nice in that you don't have to worry too much about what triggers it when, you can have low temp and high temp thermisters trigger relays for each side and have 2 switches in the cabin for constant on.... like me

i exchanged for a couple of other random smaller fans that work, heh. it has a similar 4 wire setup that works; I assume for different speeds.

bump, note the Calsonic dual, single frame found on the 2nd gen maxi

                              "Taurus Fan"

I dont mean to be a post thief, but as long as were on the topic of electric fans...

One popular choice for a cheap E-fan setup on other cars is the "Taurus fan". Different versions of this E-fan were found on 3.8L 86 - 95 Taurus / Sable, 86 - 94 Lincoln Contenintal, and 94 - 97 Thunderbirds. I havn't seen much useful info regarding this fan's use on the z31. (maybe i havnt searched enough)
Depending on who you talk to, the E-Fan draws somewhere near 30 amps on low speed and 45 amps on high speed. And the amperage can spike to over 100amps on fan startup. It supposedly puts out over 3000CFM. They are also pretty low profile; The shroud is about 3.75" thick and at the motor it is 5" thick.
Wiring up the fan shouldnt be too difficult. The fan is only a 3 wire setup with wires for low speed, high speed, and ground. My fan will be wired so that at lower temps, say less that 180 or 190, the fan will run at low. At high temps like 200+, the fan will run on high. The fan will be off when the temps are low enough. This will be accomplished using a SPDT Relay, Hayden thermostatic fan control switch(#3647) and 10 guage wire as described here http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread...&highlight=Fan....At least thats my current plan. This setup seams relatively cheap, and although its not the simplest (AKA manually control the fan via switch), it looks like a good solution for automatic fan operation. I know there are like 100 different ways of wiring an E-Fan but if you have any other good ideas, post em up!

With all that background info, here are a few questions that anyone looking to install the Taurus fan in their Z31 may have:

                              1) Will a good condition stock 70 amp alternator support this fan? Why or Why not?
                              2) Is it a waste of time and money to wire the fan for both speeds? People using this fan in their V8 powered Z's usually on wire for one speed: High.
                              3) If using fan control which utilizes a radiator temp. probe, where should the probe be placed? Inlet or Outlet?

These are basically the questions I couldn't find answered anywhere else. For those looking for more information concerning the Taurus E-fan, check out the great links MrWassmanNA2T put up, and run a few searches on HyrbidZ.

BTW my car is Turbo'ed 87 with a stock electrical system. I dont have any fancy stereo systems, or other current drawing accesories. The AC is stripped as well. Emissions equipment is also gone.
