aftermarket LSD's (i need some opinions)

So I have been searching and reading and still haven't been able to decide what to do… I have successfully wasted 2 open differentials and installed a bad LSD (i didn't realize it was bad when I bought it)… I am looking into just buying a new aftermarket LSD and ending this nonsense.

I just want to know what some of you guys are running. What you think of them. And if they are noisy (I want some performance, but little noise).

Get the OBX Helical one from ebay. There is a rebuild guide here that you should follow and it makes for a nice touch.

Yeah, the price is nice for it, but what makes it comparable or better than say the more expensive ones? (KAAZ,Nismo,Quaife, Cusco to name a few). This is going to be a big investment for me, I want to do it right, ya know?

From what I have read, they are not as good as the top name ones, but are definitely worth the price if you do the rebuild. Basically, they're awesome, especially for the price. If you're going all out, then by all means do so, but I am going to go this route to save some cash and have an above average lsd in my setup.

Overall, I'd say go with it. Look for some posts on the board about it and contact the users that have it in their cars.

Re: aftermarket LSD's (i need some opinions)

right on man, thanks for the input!

the only thing im concerned with is the fact that my differential i amusing now seems to have improper backlash (so the "z-specialist" said when he drove my car). improper backlash can wear the ring and pinion gears right? and the old one i have laying around made some pretty loud noise (like gear whine, constantly) when in gear. I am not sure if I will be able to re-use either one by just putting in a LSD unit. it seems i might have to get one rebuilt. i might as well just buy all new internals and have one rebuilt… the cheaper obx might be the way i need to go if i am going to be buying new internals and then labor for having someone set it all up.

i'd look for a used open differential to put an LSD in, but even that is iffy… i had a used open diff put in like 6 months ago when my first LSD had a backlash issue. two months after having it, i started hearing a whining noise as soon as i come off the throttle in gear. i am just so damn frustrated with this… i was supposed to be saving for a turbo swap, but i keep getting screwed over by a damn differential, something that is supposed to be very reliable in these cars.

My only other concern is that when i had the LSD removed and had the open differential put in to replace it, my rear seal on my transmission wasn't replaced by the shop and again, i leaked fluid from the transmission (probably a lot, i didn't notice it very quickly). so i am wondering if the noise could be from the transmission… but like i said, the "z-specialist" said it was definitely the differential. i don't know though, consider this my think out loud rant.

if anyone has any input please don't hesitate on telling me… thanks for looking 8)

I noticed most good lsd's are available for ~900-950 right now, not a big stretch to get a tomei or kaaz anymore

Mind you, what you should determine first is what KIND of lsd you want, helical (road race), 1.5-way (street), 2-way (drift)… then start comparing the options

Speaking of LSDs, how much does it usually cost to rebuild a CLSD out of a late year turbo? I am wondering if the price is starting to get comparable to the 900 dollar figure for aftermarket CLSDs....

Honestly for the cost and hassle of finding the bits in the first place, and then the work involved to put it together properly… it's probably a wash

Its not that bad to do if you patient,All the info is on Hybrid Z they love their diff talk and its worth having a read up there.

    You don't even need much.

Belleville Washers / Disc Springs.

But Mike G made a good point when I discussed rebuilding my CLSD with him since I think he has a Kaaz in there?…

    1) The car is pretty much useless in the rain with a Cusco or a KAAZ.
    2) After every intense track event, you should change the oil. Kaaz/Cusco oil is liquid gold (i.e.- expensive)
    3) They have like 16-24 discs, versus 2 to 4 on the stock unit. The engagement should be worlds apart from the stock CLSD.

Personally, I'm going to get an OBX to start when I do my S14 conversion.

I recently sold a CLSD rebuild kit (bearing, seals, gasket and clutches) to a member here that was valued at about $400

i was leaning more towards a 1.5 way because i will need my car for a DD… you say the Cusco and KAAZ makes driving in the rain useless? does that mean loads of oversteer? i like to slide around on wet pavement :P

I honestly think i can rebuild my differential completely, but like i said earlier i am not sure what is good and what is bad in the differential that i intend on rebuilding… i guess i will have to crack the cover open and check out the ring and pinion gears for excessive wear and what not. i'll also check courtesy nissan for some pricing on some bearings and whatever else i might need.

I got to go to work now! haha. thanks for all the input everyone.

Re: aftermarket LSD's (i need some opinions)

Mike G was the one who mentioned it being pretty much useless in the rain. I think he meant it was a little more unpredictable / like a welded diff in the rain and somewhat unsafe.

There are some tips to re-shimming and rebuilding the exterior components of the differential carrier for R200's on hybridz. Look up OBX diffs on there, and you'll come across some threads.

There are certain things that make them last longer like buying two sets of bearings because they tend to deform when trying to shim them up or something. I dunno. Just some small tips and tricks to get the most out of the diff and do the best you can.
