What’s this box? Silver thing by fuel pump

Hello y’all so I am so very close to getting my 85 turbo 5 speed running but I have concluded I don’t have fuel. I drew this conclusion by spraying starting fluid into the plenum as I crank and she turns over, also when I put the key at pre-ignition I don’t hear the pump prime. Now my research tells me the fuel relay is further towards the front so I am confused at what this silver box is. I cleaned up the ground on it to no avail but could someone tell me what this thing is and if it is necessary for my car to run cause it’s rusted badly. Thanks for the input y’all!

I takes the signal from the fuel level sender and sends it to the fuel gauge dash display.
If you can tell how much fuel you have in the tank, it's working.

Oh then it’s broken lol but I pulled the codes and they were all expected besides code 23 with is idle up solenoid but I don’t see how that can stop her from starting. Thanks for the input though!

A malfunctioning idle up solenoid shouldn't keep it from starting, but it can affect if it idles or not. If you don't hear the fuel pump relay (it's in the passenger B-Pillar), try bypassing it by running 12 volts from the battery direct to the pump (EF&EC-96 in the FSM)

How bout trying to swap a good relay in first - maybe a bad relay … ( not likely but who knows ? )

I tried a relay from a parts store it didn’t work I’m really hoping it’s not my ECU all my research is telling me that’s what it would be

Thank you sir, I’m gonna do that. I don’t hear it kick on at pre ignition so that’s what I plan to do on my next day off is hard wiring it in on a switch to see if she kicks on. Do you think it would be wise to tap into the drivers fuse box with an add-a-circuit?
