Cracked Crank Shaft

  • Cracked Crank Shaft

I’m looking to buy a 1986 2+2 5 speed. It looks almost perfect except for a cracked crank. Seller said the engine still has good oil pressure but you can hear the cracked crank when you rev it up. They said it’s not a rod knock though. What should I know about this? How much would a new crank/repair be? I’m relatively new so I’d need to get this professionally fixed too. Thanks!

    Cracked how exactly?

    Kinda sounds like bullshit.

These engines commonly make tapping noise on the top end from lifters and fuel injectors clicking, that's kinda normal.

The woodruff keyway on these cranks can chip, but nothing gets a "crack" without an almost immediate catastrophic failure.

A replacement crank would be relatively cheap, the parts and labor to install it would not be cheap. It involves pulling the motor entirely apart.

I'd hightly encourage you to look elsewhere for another Z.
